My EMDR Journey

Writer: Susan Job-Vincenzo, MA, LPCCSusan Job-Vincenzo, MA, LPCC

It’s been a minute since I last wrote thanks to the pandemic, the grief of losing a beloved dog, and the never-ending adventure that is life with chronic illnesses. Since I last wrote, I completed Basic Training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) in 2023 and I am amazed by the progress my clients are seeing. So, to heal things from my past, and to better understand how EMDR works, I have begun my own EMDR journey with a certified EMDR therapist. What I can tell you after only two sessions of intake is that it is going to be hard but worth it in the end.

Frequently I have joked that I was born anxious, but in truth anxiety has been with me for much of my life. Years ago, my husband joked that you can’t go through life being anxious all the time. I said, “yes, you can” and I was completely serious. I’m tired of being anxious all the time and I know that things I have experienced have contributed to the chronic illnesses that I live with daily. I have done EMDR therapy in the past for a car accident and would have continued with it but the pandemic happened. Now, I am picking up where I left off, only with harder stuff.

The bottom line is that I want to heal even though it will be hard. Even though it may not make substantial improvements to my physical health. Even though it will make more demands on my time and limited energy. I’m all in. Join me here for periodic updates on this new journey.
